Running 2011

Yesterday I ran the first half marathon of the year and that was also my first long run since the NYC Marathon. I hadn’t run more than 7 miles since then so I was a little afraid about my performance and that was even before knowing that Saturday was going to be that cold!! I agreed to run with some fellow runners from my running club at a very comfortable pace as we are all just coming back to training.

It was a cold but fun run!! I enjoyed very much running with them and also not to worry about the clock…I didn’t check my time at all during the run. I did have an idea because of the race’s clocks. At the end I felt really well and strong and even though I didn’t PR my time was not that bad considering the lack of training and the fact that I didn’t push at all!! I even slowed down a couple of time to stay with the group.

Could I have gone faster? Sure I could, but I have learned my lesson. After the marathon I didn’t run that much for some weeks and then when I visited my family for the holidays I didn’t run at all for more than 3 weeks; believe it or not that is a lot of time for a runner. It is incredible how fast you lose months of training. Of course you are able to recover fast but still takes a couple of weeks to go back to where you were before. Two weeks ago when I started training again I tried to run too fast and voila! I hurt my hamstring!! So yesterday I knew I needed to take it easy. My goal was to complete my first long run of the year and I did it and actually I feel very happy because I also learned that the muscles DO REMEMBER!!  My legs felt very well, no pain or soroness at all. I just need now to start building up again on speed.

Many people keep asking me what are my plans for this year and to be honest I didn’t know until last week. I was analyzing all the races/ultras I want to do and all my goals but it was very difficult to fix everything I want to do in just 1 year and still have time to work and a social life !! :)  so I needed to decide what I am willing to postpone for 2012.

After thinking a lot I have decided to give me one more year to run 100 miles. The training it is simple too demanding and I have too many things going on right now to handle it. Also, because of my work’s schedule and the weeks I need to train for this, I will need to do it between September to November which mean that I couldn’t run the NYC Marathon and I don’t want to miss it this year !!

Tentative plans are to Run the Buenos Aires Marathon 2012 during the first week of October and look for a 100 ultra for the end of October beginning of November. My family and friends in Argentina have never seen me running so I would love to run there having all them cheering for me!

Anyway 2011 won’t be an easy year….no way!! I have planned a very busy schedule. I never thought about doing some of the races I have signed up but it was just something that happened without planning it. Invitations, friends doing them or willing to go to cheer for me, my own craziness, etc, etc, etc….not sure what happened but went from don’t know what to do this year to have almost one big even every month in just 2 days!

So here is the list:

Races/Ultras

North Face Endurance Challenge Bear Mountain– 50K (31 miles) – May 7

North Face Endurance Challenge Washington DC- 50 Miles – June 4

North Fork Century – 100 Miles Bike Ride – August 29

Berlin Marathon – 26.2 Miles – September 25

NYC Marathon – 26.2 Miles – November 6

Other goals

Run at least 4 of the Half Marathon series to qualify for next year NYC Half Marathon

Run a sub 2 half marathon

Run 9 races + volunteer to get into 2012 NYC Marathon – just in case I finally want to run it …you never know :)

I have other many goals but I think this is enough to give you and idea!! Yeap…I will be very busy!!

Finally I want to mention that I am really excited about how many people from work read my blog and also how much some of them have been inspired. I got an email some days ago from someone in our Edison’s office telling me that he has decided to run an ultra marathon!! and he will start training to run the same ultra I did last year. He also said he likes my race's report and  my tips and recommendations. It is really very rewarding to know that at least someone is reading and enjoying what I write and also that I can inspire people to run. Thanks for letting me know!!

It is impressive the support I have at work, not only from co workers but also from the partners. This has became such a popular topic between everyone that I am in conversations with a partner who wants to help me to have a running group at the office!! Yeap..my own ( really EisnerAmper but I will coordinate it) running group!! I am very looking forward to this but as in every big company this things takes time and many approvals. I hope we can finally bring the running group to live next summer!!! Of course post busy season!!

Stay tuned, training reports will start soon!

ps. if you visit my blog please leave a comment, I could love to know that you have been here!!
